What is a DSEAR risk assessment?
A DSEAR risk assessment identifies and evaluates risks from dangerous substances that could cause fire, explosion or similar hazardous events in the workplace. It considers the substances present, how they are stored and used, potential sources of release, ignition sources and the measures required to control the risk.
Does my business need a DSEAR risk assessment?
If dangerous substances are present or could be produced during your work activities, DSEAR may apply. This can include flammable liquids, gases, vapours, combustible dusts and other substances capable of creating a fire or explosion risk. A DSEAR assessment determines whether significant risks exist and whether additional controls are required.
How much does a DSEAR risk assessment cost?
The cost depends on the size and complexity of the site, the number of dangerous substances and processes involved, and whether detailed hazardous area classification is required. Hielaman can provide a quotation based on information about your site and activities.
What is hazardous area classification?
Hazardous area classification identifies locations on your site where an explosive atmosphere may occur and defines the zone type (Zone 0, 1, 2 for gases; Zone 20, 21, 22 for dusts). This determines which ATEX-rated equipment can be used in each area. Classification is carried out in line with EI 15 and BS EN 60079.
How long does a DSEAR risk assessment take?
Timescales depend on the size and complexity of your site. A single-process site may be completed within a day. Larger multi-process facilities with hazardous area classification and drawings typically take two to five days including report preparation. Contact Hielaman for a site-specific estimate.
Are EV charging installations covered by DSEAR?
Yes. EV charging installations and battery charging areas can release hydrogen gas and present thermal runaway risks, both of which fall under DSEAR. A risk assessment is required to identify hazardous zones, control ignition sources and ensure safe installation.
Do spray booths need a DSEAR assessment?
Yes. Spray booths and paint spraying areas involve flammable solvents and vapours that create explosive atmospheres. DSEAR requires employers to assess the risk, define hazardous zones, control ignition sources and ensure appropriate equipment is used. This includes paint mixing rooms and flammable product storage adjacent to spray areas.
